Sandeep Biswas, outgoing CEO of Newcrest Mining

Newcrest Mining have announced that CEO Sandeep Biswas will retire after eight years leading Australia’s largest gold mining company.

Sherry Duhe, who joined the business in February as CFO, will serve as temporary chief executive while the company undertakes the search for a replacement, according to a filing with the exchange by Newcrest.

Chairman Peter Tomsett said in a statement: “As we look towards the future, it is an opportune time for fresh leadership to accelerate the evolution of our company and ensure we are best placed to make the most of the opportunities in front of us.”

Duhe has a background in energy, having served as CFO of Woodside Energy and spent 13 years at Shell.

Next year, Newcrest anticipates an appointment to be set. It has sought the assistance of executive headhunter Russell Reynolds for the search, which has been ongoing for “for some months and included conversations with Sandeep.”

Biswas offered an apology to the Australian Financial Review less than a year ago, following allegations of his improper treatment of employees.

Biswas, who will step down as managing director on Monday, will continue to serve as an advisor until March 18.
