The channel tunnel

Getlink, the company that operates the Channel Tunnel, has posted a rise of almost 50% in first-quarter revenue, reflective of recovery across the travel industry as effects of the pandemic subside.

Getlink CEO Yann Leriche announced the results in a statement, saying that “the strong rebound in passenger traffic and the levels reached over the Easter holidays show that our customers are keen to resume their travels”.

Revenue for the period January-March rose by 46% to 227.8 million euros ($247.03 million), with revenue generated from shuttle services and railway network growing by 55% and 57% respectively.

With the majority of travel restrictions now lifted across Europe, passenger traffic jumped by over 150% compared to the same period in 2021. Truck traffic also rose by 23%.

Eurostar, the major client operating train services between the UK, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, saw a traffic increase of more than 1,000% in the first quarter, Getlink said.

Cross-Channel rail freight however saw a 15% drop in the number of trains, caused by the disruption of international supply chains.
