August 19, 2019 – U.S. President Donald Trump said Sunday he does not want to do business with Huawei Technologies Co., indicating his country intends to continue blacklisting the Chinese tech giant.
“I don’t want to do business at all because it is a national security threat,” Trump told reporters.
The Commerce Department, which announced in May it will allow Huawei to continue business with U.S. companies to service existing customers until Monday, is expected to extend the deadline by 90 days to November, according to Reuters and other media reports.
“We’ll see what happens. I’m making a decision tomorrow,” Trump said.
The president also revealed Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook has expressed concern about the administration’s planned additional tariffs on imports from China, including Apple products made in the Asian country.
Trump has ordered 10 percent tariffs on an additional $300 billion in goods imported from China. The tariffs were originally scheduled to take effect on Sept. 1, but those on some items including Apple’s iPhones and laptop computers were delayed until December.
Levies on the Apple Watch and other accessories are still planned for Sept. 1.
Bloomberg reported that Cook told Trump that Apple will lose its competitive edge against Samsung as the South Korean competitor, which manufactures across several countries, will suffer less impact from the tariffs.
