April 13, 2016 – An entire historic town is for sale in the Australian island state of Tasmania for just over US$8 million.

The remote town of Tarraleah in the central highlands was built in the 1930s to house 2,000 workers who were building a nearby hydroelectric dam.The town includes a church, theatre, school and 33 homes built in the art deco style.

The 145-hectare town was deserted by the 1990s as the hydro dam had become automated.

Current owner Julian Horner spent the past 13 years restoring the town, which has become a tourist attraction for hikers, fishers and bushwalkers. It features a lodge, bar, cafe and trout-fishing dam.

Hobart real estate agent John Blacklow said the town could fetch as much as 11 million Australian dollars (8.4 million US dollars) and that expressions of interest had come from around the world since the town was put up for sale a few days ago.

“It is 126 kilometres from Hobart, surrounded by mountains and natural bushland and already attracts 2 million dollars a year from tourists,” Blacklow told dpa.

“In just a few days we have had inquiries from as far away as Holland, China, Hong Kong and Singapore.”

He said the whole town is being sold as a block, but it is possible for the purchaser to sell off individual houses or blocks of land.
